Mathematics at Cobble Hill
At the Cobble Hill School, we believe that math is more than just numbers and formulas—it’s a vital tool for empowering students to achieve their dreams and build long-term success. Our goal is to ensure that every student graduates on a pathway to a rewarding career and economic security, equipped to be a positive force for change. Math plays a key role in this journey by offering students the critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills they need to succeed in any field.
In the 2023 school year, we began implementing Illustrative Mathematics as our math curriculum, a step forward in providing better math instruction. The focus is on “sense making”. Instead of starting with instructions on how to think about a problem, we give students a chance to engage with unfamiliar problems and explore what they already know. This approach builds confidence, showing students that math is something they can figure out by applying their own knowledge and ideas.
We are also building a diverse, collaborative community of learners. By giving all students the same grade-level tasks but tailoring them with varied entry points and challenges, we meet the needs of learners at all levels. Students learn from each other’s ideas, and together, they tackle complex problems as a group. This creates an inclusive classroom where every student’s voice and thinking are valued.
Finally, we shifted from deficit-based to asset-based support, focusing on what students know and can do. Through inclusive, engaging math instruction, we help all students develop the skills they need not just for school, but for life beyond graduation.
